PROJECT CONFERENCES

Friday, November 19, 2021

Friday, November 19th

Starter:  Reflect for a few minutes on where you are in this project and what you might need feedback on.  Write a focusing question for today’s “tune.”

PROJECT TUNE PROTOCOL: Help each other move forward with good questioning and feedback! Share ideas and talk through struggles!

THE GOAL is to leave today with a clear sense of your path forward on your project!

Starter 11.6:  Reflect for a few minutes on where you are in the project and what you might need feedback on.  Write a focusing question for today’s “tune.”

Project Tune Protocol

1. Project Share/Focusing Question (1-5 min)

  1. Presenter articulates the nitty-gritty of the project details.  Share the perspective you are trying to convey with your project. –AND/OR—Group members read the draft of the project in its written form—AND/OR—Presenter reads the project aloud to group members.

  2. Presenter shares out the focusing question from the starter and shares any areas they feel they need feedback on.

2.  Clarification (1-2 minutes)

  1. Participants ask questions to get information they may need about the concrete details of the project.

  2. These questions are matters of fact, and should not delve into deeper issues.

  3. Examples:

What is the ideological bias of the project?  What genre will you use?  How will you edit the video?

3.  Probing Questions (4-5 min)

  1. The purpose of probing questions is NOT to give suggestions, but to help the presenter think more deeply about their project and what they are trying to do with it.

  2. Probing questions should be big open-ended questions.  (think: seminar questions)

  3. Examples:

Why is it important that you communicate this message to your audience?

Why did you decide on this topic?

How will you connect emotionally to the audience?

What rhetorical impact do you want the audience to experience?

4.  Participant Discussion (5-7ish minutes)

  1. Participants share feedback with each other while the presenter is silent and removed from the circle.
  2. Start with WARM feedback. What is strong about the project?
  3. Move into suggestions/ideas for improvement.  Discuss the presenter’s focusing question!  Think about ways the project could achieve its desired effect, incorporate rhetorical strategies, and generally get to the next level of awesomeness.  Continue to discuss questions that you have about the project.
  4. Presenter is silent and takes notes.

5. Reflection (2-3ish minutes)

  1. Presenter speaks to comments/questions that were posed in the discussion while participants are silent.  This is a time for the presenter to reflect aloud on those ideas or questions that seemed particularly interesting or helpful or to ask questions about the comments of the group members.

6. Open discussion (if time allows…try to keep it to 20ish minutes per project)

1.   Group openly discusses the ideas for revision that came out of the critique.  This is the time to help each other troubleshoot the project!

EMPATHY INTERVIEW:
1. Reminder: this piece is now highly recommended (instead of required) and counts as one of your 8 required sources.
2. If you need to do this interview over break, that is great. Just send me an email letting me know that, and write the plan for it into your research notes.
3. You can do more than one interview. Each one counts as a source.
4. You can interview your peers, just so long as they have a view that differs from your own in some way.

Sample Email to solicit an intervew:

Dear _______________:
Hello, I am a junior at Animas High School studying political ideology in Jessica McCallum's Humanities class.  For our current project, we are researching a range of perspectives on a political issue of our choosing.  I am reaching out to you because one of our tasks is to interview someone who might have a developed perspective on our topic.  I am researching ____________.  I thought you might have some valuable input because__________.  Please let me know if you might be available to chat about this topic some time in the next few weeks.  Thank you for your time!

WORK TIME TODAY:

  • ESSAY CONFERENCES/REVISIONS
  • CONTINUE RESEARCH!
  • SET UP INTERVIEWS!

Tuesday, November 9, 2021

Tuesday, November 9th

TODAY: RESEARCH AND REVISIONS!

RESEARCH NOTES AND EMPATHY INTERVIEWS

At this point, you should be getting into the research! Attached is the template for research notes. I am okay if you document your research in a different format, but these are good guidelines for things to look for in your sources. You should have a minimum of 4 sources that support or resonate with your bias, and a minimum of 4 sources that challenge or oppose your bias. The empathy interviews count toward these sources!

The thesis statements on both sides of the issue ARE NOT OPTIONAL. No matter the format of your research notes, please write these statements!

NOTE on EMPATHY INTERVIEWS: Because of the nature of Rogerian rhetoric, the interviews are highly recommended to help you better understand where the “other” side is coming from. Please do your best to find someone to interview. Thanksgiving might give you an opportunity if you have family members with differing political beliefs.

PERSONAL ESSAY CONFERENCES:

  1. Sign up for a conference.
