Today, finish your DP Update/Project Reflection:

Create a DP Post that contains the following elements, refined and aesthetically arranged:

1.  Title of Project:  The Ethics and Chemistry of Food and Cooking

2. DESCRIPTION/REFLECTION
Paragraph 1: Describe the project (what we did in both classes)
Paragraph 2: Reflect on your group’s meal
Paragraph 3: How did the interdisciplinary nature of this project impact your learning?
Paragraph 4: What are your main takeaways from studying food academically?  How has your thinking about food changed from before?

3.  Chemistry Reflection

4. ARTIFACTS: Photos, Recipes, Menu, and any other tidbits from the experience that you feel would make your DP beautiful and interesting!

1. Arrange tables in 6-tops.
2. Sit with your groups.
3. Plan your display: Make lists. See link to doc.

  • What do you need to print for your display?
  • Who brings what tomorrow?
  • Think about decor AND artifacts.  Make it beautiful!

4.  Clean?  Help with sheets?  Other room decor?

Essay
1. TITLE!  Centered and Bold, one step larger font
2. Name underneath title, not bold
3. Get a proofread and make sure your formatting is clean.
4. Print and mount on black paper.  If you aren't quite done with the essay, you are responsible for this step before tomorrow.  I will be putting the printer away at the end of the day.

Advice for Meals, recapped...

  • Give yourself ample time before meal service
  • Make a list of your needs before you go
  • Make more food than you need
  • Invite Jessica and Steve
  • Prepare an intro to the meal the contextualizes the project and the purpose of the meal: Don't wing it!
  • THINK THROUGH (write down?) your TALKING POINTS.  These should be present at ASE, so it is to your advantage to have this done..
  • PHOTO all parts of meal: cooking, serving, close-ups of the food itself
  • Prompt your diners to think/talk about the themes we have studied.
  • PRINT OUT A MENU!!!!!


For All-School Exhibition...
Your group will recreate a “table setting” based on your theme that documents your meal and the science and ethics behind it.  The table should include the following artifacts:

  • Table setting and decor that matches of the theme of your meal
  • Photos of the actual meal service
  • A detailed menu
  • Documentation of your content knowledge in Chemistry and Humanities
  • Something for your audience to take away with them (Recipe cards? Quoteworthy ethical statements?  Food poetry? Advice about cooking methods?)
  • Samples of the food itself?
  • Food Ethic Essays of your group

  • Essay due next Wednesday.  Please conference with me today or tomorrow if you need to.  Tuesday, we will start setting up my class for exhibition, so plan your work time accordingly.

Add to your task list:  Introduction to the Meal

  • Who will speak to introduce the purpose of the meal to your diners?  What will they say?

Add to today's work:  Submit a "write-up" for what you will personally say about the science and ethics of your own contribution.

When you turn it in, reflect in the body of the email:
1. What area of the rubric do you believe is the strongest part of your essay?  Why?
2. What do you think you need to work on most when you revise?
3. What would you like me to focus my feedback on?
(If you already submitted your essay, please go back and answer these questions in an email.)


If you are finished with your essay, perhaps trade papers with someone else who has finished to give each other feedback?  Or, watch documentaries about food?  Additional research?  Start scripting your meal presentation, recipe, etc.?

Meal group planning meeting!

New range for dates:  You can execute your meal anytime between Thursday, April 19 and Tuesday, April 24.  Check in with groups about nailing down a time and place on the calendar.  This opens it up to potentially be a slow food lunch on Saturday or Sunday:)

Due next Monday to Steve and Jessica:

  • A detailed menu with task division indicated 
  • An ingredient list for each component of the meal
  • A proposed budget based on your ingredient list, including a request for funds (This means you should establish how much each of you can contribute to your own meal.  Steve and I can only afford to give each group around $75.)
